Vodafone intros Smart on pay-as-you-go plans
European wireless provider Vodafone introduced the self-branded Smart phone. The Android 2.2 device will let pay-as-you-go customers access the Android Market, Gmail, Google Maps and Google Talk. Users interact through a 2.8-inch capacitive touchscreen and access the web through 3G and Wi-Fi. Bluetooth is also onboard.
The phone will initially be available in white or black but users will have the experience to fully customize the exterior using a web app when they buy. This includes a range of colors or graphic designs.
The homescreen will have links to Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, Vodafone Music and Vodafone's 'Prepay Manager' to add service. An Updates widget will show the top Android Market apps and other services picked by Vodafone.
The Vodafone Smart arrives on pay-as-you go voice and data plans early this summer in Vodafone markets. The first countries to get the handset include Germany, Italy, and the UK, with prices set at about €90 ($127).
