Xperia Play shipment for New Zealand stolen

A shipment of Sony Ericsson Xperia Play handsets headed to New Zealand has been stolen, Vodafone announced over Twitter on Tuesday. This is the latest problem for the gaming-oriented smartphone, which suffered delays and hasn't been selling well in some areas since its launch. Vodafone hasn't revealed how many phones were taken, but simply stated there had been a security breach.

The Xperia Play is also suffering from limited production capacity stemming from the natural disasters in Japan. In the new incident, how the thieves expect to make money on the devices remains to be seen, as selling them online could lead to a fairly easy arrest.

The Xperia Play is just about to go on sale at Verizon next week. [via Engadget]
