Motorola Droid X2 confirmed for Verizon next week

Verizon got its first dual-core smartphone on Wednesday with the official confirmation of its long-in-waiting Droid X2. The smartphone is a major upgrade to the original and packs a dual-core, 1GHz Tegra 2 that helps both for gaming and for HDMI video out. Its display has taken a leap as well, staying at 4.3 inches but growing the resolution from 480x854 to 540x960.

The phone still ships with Android 2.2 and Motorola's Blur layer. Users now get a Swype keyboard layer and can create a five-device 3G hotspot when paired with a tethering plan. An eight-megapixel camera on the back allows for 720p movies along with the usual still photos.

Pre-orders start on Thursday for the phone, which will cost the usual $200 when paired with voice and a smartphone-level data plan. Retail stores should start carrying the Droid X2 on May 26.
