Sharp makes 85-inch LCD with 8k image support

Sharp has teamed up with Japanese broadcaster NHK on a prototype 85-inch LCD set that is the first to support a native 7680x4320 resolution. The much denser image lets it receive NHK's recently tested Super Hi-Vision broadcasts without losing any detail. Super Hi-Vision offers 16 times the resolution of 1080p HDTV, and NHK plans on sending out trial broadcasts in 2020.

It has been developing the technology since 1995. Specs on the prototype Sharp TV are modest in return for the extra resolution. Sharp's UV A panel produces 300cd/m2 brightness and 10 bits per color. Some conventional TVs now support 'deep color' at 14 bits or more.

Super Hi-Vision also includes support for sound up to 22.2 channels. It does require bandwidth of 24Gbps, however. The BBC and NHK successfully sent a Super Hi-Vision broadcast from London to Japan in the fall of 2010. Back in 2008, JVC created the technology for an 8K compatible projector as well.
