Verizon approves Novatel E362 4G LTE chipset

Novatel Wireless has received the technical go-ahead for its Expedite E362 4G LTE embedded module for Verizon's LTE network. The card has a Qualcomm MDM9600 chipset at its core and is backwards compatible with current global 2G and 3G GSM and CDMA networks.

The E362 also has a GPS sensor and is thus capable of providing location information for compatible apps. There is also a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna onboard. LTE networks provide maximum theoretical data speeds of 100Mbps.

Exactly what Verizon devices will get the card or when they will arrive hasn't yet been revealed, but it would open the door to netbooks and notebooks with the card built-in, as well as tablets. Motorola is still waiting on a 4G upgrade for the Xoom this summer but might not necessarily use Novatel's hardware.
