Amazon brings back 99-cent Lady Gaga album sale

Amazon again selling latest Gaga album for $0.99

Amazon has brought back its 99-cent Born This Way MP3 album sale from Lady Gaga. First offered on Monday as part of the Gold Box Deal of the Day, the sale proved much more popular than even Amazon imagined, leading to server failures and download errors. Those who buy the album also get access to Amazon's 20GB Cloud Drive storage that lets them access digital music from anywhere.

The album remains on top of Amazon's bestselling MP3 albums list since the Monday sale. The Cloud Drive service usually includes 5GB of free storage, but buyers of any album are upgraded to 20GB of storage for free. Those who do not purchase an album can upgrade to the 20GB locker for $4 per month.

Its price slash has been widely interpreted as an attempt to grab buyers away from iTunes, where the Lady Gaga album is still selling briskly and whose share of music in the US is still much larger than Amazon's. Amazon regularly sells MP3 music below cost, often absorbing all the loss itself, but has seldom had success cracking Apple's share and getting listeners to jump over.
