Nokia CEO vows Symbian updates until 2016

Symbian still a part of smartphone OS options

Nokia will continue to support and invest in the Symbian OS for at least the next five years. That commitment was made by Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop in an interview with the Nokia Conversations blog, Chinese Edition, published earlier today. His statement addresses concerns over how quickly Nokia could abandon Symbian as it migrates to a Windows Phone centric smartphone strategy.

In February, Nokia announced that it was going to switch to Windows Phone as its "principal" smartphone strategy. Since then, the future of Symbian, which was driven by Nokia, remained cloudy. Today's statement indicates that Symbian will be around and updated for a long time, at least in smartphone years.

"We are in a period where the investment in Symbian absolutely continues. Even as we go through a transition to our primary smartphone platform, Windows Phone, you will see software updates to Symbian devices," said Elop, "until at least 2016." [via All About Symbian]
