14-year-old hacker repurposed for good by MS

Microsoft has caught a 14-year-old Dublin teenager who hacked into its Xbox online systems. The story came to light this week when Microsoft’s Ireland General Manager revealed the events during a keynote speech at the Bank of Ireland Business Week. The 14-year-old was directly responsible for millions of users who were alerted after successfully hacking into Modern Warfare 2 on the Xbox 360 platform.

Like the massive Sony Playstation Network data breach, Microsoft was concerned that user information could have been exposed during the attack. However, instead of pursuing the boy through legal channels, Microsoft has instead opted to nurture his talent. The details of what Microsoft has the boy working on were not made public, but his efforts are said to be directed into a legitimate use of his skills. [via Herald]
