But x86-tuned Javascript browser engine shines

Android tablets running the NVidia Tegra 2 chipset have a substantial performance edge over Atom-based tablets, according to a series of benchmark tests performed for Tweakers. Researchers tested four tablets running Android 3.0.1 (Honeycomb). The lone Atom tablet tested, a prototype from Compal Electronics with a dual core 1.5GHz Oak Trail CPU, posted a Caffeinemarks score that was barely one-fourth that of the slowest Nvidia tablet. Caffeinemarks is a synthetic test that gauges the speed at which Android apps will run on a given system.

The three tablets with Nvidia Tegra 2 processors were the Acer Iconia Tab A500, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1., and ASUS Eee Pad Transformer. All three had Caffeinemarks scores of 6200 or higher, versus the Compal tablet's mark of 1562. The standard score of 100 is based on a 133MHz Pentium running Windows 95 and the Sun JDK 1.1 interpreter.

The researchers also reported that the Compal pad seemed sluggish in comparison to the others, so the lower score was not unexpected.

Also as expected, the Compal tablet did much better on the JavaScript browser rendering test. Honeycomb is optimized for the Atom GMA600 graphics processor used by the Compal pad. The prototype Atom tablet rendered the test page in 1500 ms or roughly 20 percent faster than the Eee Pad Transformer, the runner up. The testers conclude that future iterations of Honeycomb optimized for Nvidia chipsets would erase that perfomance gap. [via Tweakers (Dutch)]
