HTC Evo 4G gets Android 2.3 immediately and OTA

Sprint in an update has confirmed previous clues that it would upgrade the HTC Evo 4G to Android 2.3. Starting today, June 3, owners can check for the upgrade themselves and load it manually. Automatic, over-the-air updates would happen in waves starting from the hinted-at June 6 release date.

The 2.3 upgrade gives a number of features specific to the Evo 4G, such as returning the option of syncing more than one Gmail account. It once again displays mail attachments and improves the smartphone's ability to hold its charge.

All Android 2.3 devices get the new interface tweaks, better app and power management, and overall faster performance. It's unknown whether or not the update moves the Evo 4G to the 2.3.4 build and Google video chat as well as the latest security fixes. No matter which exact version, the Evo 4G will have been one of the best-supported HTC and overall Android phones to date with two significant revisions having passed through since the phone first shipped about a year ago.

Android 2.3 may still be the last major iteration to reach the phone with Ice Cream Sandwich being more specifically designed to resemble a tablet interface.
