Migrating customers to Windows Live SkyDrive

Microsoft said it was shutting down its My Phone service for Windows Mobile 6.x phone users starting in August. The company wants to migrate existing customers over to their Windows Live SkyDrive Service instead. Microsoft believes that cloud-based SkyDrive is is the best way to continue providing its customers with archiving services.

Microsoft will stop synchronizing data between My Phone-configured Windows Mobile 6.x phones and the My Phone service onn August 7. User data will stop being backed up to the My Phone service. The company instead will begin automatic migration of contact, calendar, texts and photos from the My Phone service to Windows Live SkyDrive. Videos, music, documents, tasks and browser favorites will not be moved over. Customers will have to download these types of data themselves before October 6 and find an alternative. The My Phone website will close down on that date.

If users aren't able to archive the content not transfered to SkyDrive by October, then they can request from Microsoft a CD or DVD containing all data saved to their My Phone account until October, 2012.
