Nokia chief: Apple was what allowed Android to happen

Nokia's Stephen Elop says iPhone made Android

Nokia chief Stephen Elop during a speech at the Open Mobile Summit said iPhone had effectively been responsible for making Android. He argued that Apple had "created Android" or, at a minimum, had "created the conditions necessary to create Android." Companies decided they couldn't play along with Apple and had to do something else, leading to Android becoming the de facto standard.

Apple had also at leased raised alarms with carriers, but Google's hardware partners were afraid because of the revenue opportunity. Nokia wanted to be as friendly as possible.

He didn't necessarily think Android was inherently better. If Apple had a closed box, Google's box "still has flaps" and could be harmful. He suggested that Google was disingenuous on Android's openness and that some areas were closed. "If you counted the number of lines in Android code you might get a different perspective on how open it really is," he said.

Elop once again said Windows Phone had been chosen over Android because of the lack off differentiation, and when they did often resulted in a fragmented platform. Low WP7 sales were attributed to phone manufacturers giving WP7 short shrift. They put their "best work" into Android. Nokia was hoping to do the same with Windows Phone and could give it better treatment, Elop thought.

Android was formally started by a small team led by Andy Rubin years before the iPhone, but it wasn't 2007 that the first public view the platform emerged after Google had bought it out two years ago. At the time, it was more like a BlackBerry-style operating system and made the switch to its current touchscreen-heavy focus in 2008 after companies like HTC and Motorola wanted to seize on the popularity of the iPhone.

What he said / what he meant

What Elop said: ...Windows Phone had been chosen over Android because of the lack of differentiation... (paraphrased)

What Elop meant: Nokia has too much pride to throw itself down the generic droid phone maker staircase.

    de facto standard

How is something that's used by less than 50% of users a de facto standard? Give it a rest Nokia.

    What he didn't say

Nokia is Microsoft's hardware mistress. MS gives her nice things and attention occasionally. But never a ring.

MS' relationship with Windows + Office is old and deep (and profitable.) Spending too much time with WP7 would threaten to destroy the family.

    what de dacto standard?

I fail to see how android is the de facto standard. He would have sounded more credible had he said that android was the next alternative. I'm sorry but android isn't a de factor standard? There is no standards body that mandates what should go into a mobile OS and what it should look like. If other hardware manufacturers can't create their own OS and build a tangible ecosystem around it then the next suitable alternative to them currently is what seems to be free; that is hardly de facto.

This guy is beginning to sound pompous. Why doesn't his company come up with their own OS post Symbian with a compelling ecosystem that will give their customers an alternative to what Apple is offering. This is business. To each and their business model but if you can't compete simply go home and stop making noise.

    No he's right

If you're a phone maker and want an OS, Android is the de facto standard. How can one disagree with that--from that perspective.

    he's jealous

Apple created their own phone operating system and an ecosystem to go with it. Apple is under no business or social obligation to share that system with competitors. Apple is selling hardware and software to make a profit.

Google created android so they can have a platform to sell ads with. Almost all of Google's revenues come from advertising. Google's hardware phone was a flop.

Everyone I know either has an iPhone or wants an iPhone. If Google wasn't giving Android away then Apple would own the smartphone market right now. As it is, Apple sells all the iOS devices it can make. Nokia likely won't even be in business in two years.

Yup, but Android has NOT been much of a rescue

If you look at the profit for smart phones in fact phones period you see, Apple, Rim, and a bit for HTC [who also a Windows 7 type] everyone else [read Android] is not so good. Treading water or sinking.

The numbers suggest Android model is at best a place holder and probably RIM, HP WebOS, and Nokia with Windows is a big part of the future.

    Nokia and Microsoft Elop(e)

To Microsofts credit they seem to be trying with W7 phone to offer a product that does not look or function exactly like an iPhone. Google has replaced them on the cheap OEM front for the post-PC era and they find themselves left out in the cold clutching a W7 os that has few takers. All the trash talk Microsoft has preached about open source these past 10 years has become a reality and not how they imagined it. Andoid is now the worlds biggest "white box" OS but not in PCs but for trashy cell phones. The market has divided into those that will pay for a quality experience and those that will not or cannot afford one. Microsoft and W7 is right in the middle and like any middle child will tell you no matter how amazing you are you just wont be getting enough attention.

"Apple embarrassed the crud out of every phone maker on the face of the earth. Luckily someone else unassociated with phone making came up with a competitive OS we could use so that we don't all look like complacent idiots. We still are, but..."
