Samsung 30nm DDR3 goes into RAM kits
Samsung on Thursday pushed past a milestone by readying its 30 nanometer DDR3 RAM for off-the-shelf PCs. The 2GB and 4GB sticks will keep power consumption low, about 66 percent less than a 60nm chip, but still hit a 1.6Mbps peak bandwidth. They're considered an option not just to expand RAM but to possibly draw out the battery life of a notebook using older memory.
Both SODIMMs needed for portables as well as low-profile desktop RAM will be available in both single and twin packs, the latter of which to make the most out of dual-channel or better memory buses on most current computers.
Samsung anticipates shipping the RAM to US stores in summer and will cost anything from $30 to $55 depending on the capacity and the category. Fry's, Micro Center, NewEgg, and TigerDirect should all have the 30nm memory by the summer.
