Milestone took 13 weeks to reach
Nintendo has finally sold more than one million 3DS handhelds in its native Japan. Surprisingly, the milestone was not reached until the device had been on the market for 13 weeks. Reasons for the lackluster sales performance remain unclear, though some critics cite high price and a limited number of high-profile game titles as contributing factors.
The company is attempting to bolster sales with the introduction of new games, such as Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Star Fox 3D, along with a Red Flare color option in Japan. A recent firmware update added a web browser and eShop support for game downloads, however users are still left to wait for features such as 3D video downloads.
The 3DS will be met with additional competition in the near future, as Sony's PlayStation Vita arrives on the market with the same $250 price tag. [via Mantan-Web]
