Battle: Los Angeles first offering

Vudu has launched a new digital movie card service through its parent Walmart. Customers can purchase the card for a desired movie in-store, and then use the provided code at home to stream it and watch it on their computer or other Vudu-enabled electronic device, including an HDTV, Blu-ray player, or a PlayStation 3. The first movie to be offered is Sony's Battle: Los Angeles.

VUDU's main business has been offering subscription-free, video-on-demand movies the same day as they become available on DVD. Recently, the company has expanded its offering to include television shows, putting it in direct competition with Netflix and Apple's iTunes Store.

VUDU believes that offering digital movie cards is a good way to help those Walmart customers who are used to making physical purchases of DVDs, making them more comfortable with the experience of digital ownership.

Walmart bought Vudu in 2010 to bolster its penetration of the digital media delivery market.

Available now, the Battle: Los Angeles card costs $15.
