Google Nexus 4G may use LTE, dual-core, 720p

Google's promised Nexus phone may be one of the most advanced phones ever when it ships this fall, according to a detailed rumor on Wednesday. Tentatively called the Nexus 4G, it would be a centerpiece for Ice Cream Sandwich's all-touch interface with a "monster-sized," 720p screen. It would also pack LTE-based 4G and could even be the first cross-carrier LTE device since it will follow after AT&T's LTE network launch.

Inside, the phone wouldn't necessarily be bleeding edge but would be at the forefront. It would run a future dual-core 1.2GHz or 1.5GHz processor, most likely either a TI OMAP4460 or else a Qualcomm Krait-based Snapdragon chip, along with 1GB of RAM. The speed would let it record 1080p video. Unusually, it would still be using just a five-megapixel camera and focus on low-light photography and genuine image quality over resolution.

A launch would come sometime around Thanksgiving in late November. The hardware manufacturer hasn't been identified, though, and it's possible the phone may simply be a regular third-party phone 'blessed' as Google's official Ice Cream Sandwich hardware. One as yet unverified rumor alluded to HTC once again manufacturing the hardware.

If a Nexus, the design would see Google return to making the phone one of the best devices on the market rather than just giving it an unmodified OS. The Nexus One led smartphones for months; the Samsung-made Nexus S, though, was just a mildly upgraded Galaxy S using a newer OS.
