Seesmic drops BlackBerry app due to lack of demand

Seesmic gives up on BlackBerry app

Seesmic in a notice said it planned to drop all support for the BlackBerry version of its app. As of June 30, the company would swing its attention to the "most popular" platforms, including not just Android and iOS but even the much younger Windows Phone 7 platform. Company founder Loic Le Meur said on Twitter that there was no fallout with RIM.

"I would like to personally thank RIM and the BlackBerry team for their support over the years," he said. "They've been awesome, [it's] not related."

Alternative apps still exist, such as the official Twitter app and UberSocial.

The drop would still reinforce one of the worst weeks in recent memory for RIM, which saw poor results and guidance and a collapse in its stock value. RIM has been successful in growing BlackBerry App World in recent months but has had mounting problems getting support for the PlayBook and may have additional problems in getting support for apps that can take advantage of BlackBerry 7.

Mentioning Windows Phone 7 as a more popular platform is particularly condemning for RIM given considerably lower market share.

    Doing WinPhone 7 because...

it's more profitable. Not with sales, but because Microsoft will pay you money just to develop for it.

    Simple numbers

Honestly, Windows Phone 7 just became the unofficial and final OS in the smartphone race. Microsoft must be proud.

    yawn

Just another app that handles all your 'social media' outlets. Wow, I guess it must be the end of BB, being this previously unknown app is no longer going to develop for it. Now there's only 935 apps that do this available.

Blackberry May have a Lot of Users

But most of those users are business users and not using their Blackberry phones for social media. I know. I have a Blackberry, but use my iPhone for social media.

RIM's market share dropped precipitously last month. At one time, private users were buying Blackberries, but they are all now buying iPhones and Androids. The only remaining customers for Blackberry are businesses that haven't yet allowed their employees to switch to iPhones.
