Nokia to offer N950 developer phone alongside N9

Hardware matches N9 consumer offering

Nokia has detailed a new handset, the N950, that represents a developer variant of the upcoming N9 smartphone. Like the N9, the developer offering centers around an ARM Cortex-A8 processor running at 1GHz and paired with 1GB of RAM. Both devices also share an 854x480 touchscreen, however the N950 panel is slightly larger and uses a standard LCD rather than AMOLED technology.

Other noticeable differences include the housing, which is produced from aluminum for the N950 and plastic for the N9. The developer variant also offers a QWERTY slider; the N9 is a buttonless design for touch-only input.

Nokia is vague regarding the N950's camera, claiming it is capable of shooting in an eight-megapixel mode. The language suggests the sensor may actually be capable of capturing higher-resolution stills than the consumer device.

The company cautions that the N950 will be "beta quality" and without warranty. Developers are also told to avoid using one-pixel width fonts due to the differences between standard LCDs and AMOLED panels, while the N950 lacks support for NFC and Bluetooth 4.0.

Nokia has yet to announce a launch date for the N950; the handset is said to be available only in limited quantities. The consumer N9 edition is promised to ship later this year, with details to be announced at a later date. [via My Nokia Blog]
