Vizio Via tablet gets launch details

Vizio on Tuesday Via tablet. The eight-inch Android 2.3 slate is due to ship in July and should cost about $349. A spokesman told Engadget that future OS upgrade to Android 3.2 or Ice Cream Sandwich was a possibility, but wasn't ready to commit to an OS choice in the near future.

The tablet is unique in having an IR blaster that can be used to steer most home theater devices, including non-Vizio TVs and set-top boxes. It can act as its own home theater source and has both HDMI out for HD video as well as three speakers for relatively loud audio. The speaker layout covers multiple sides to make sure the sound isn't blocked when the owner holds the tablet.

Signs have emerged the tablet might not be quite ready, at least at the one-month mark. The interface is still relatively choppy and not necessarily flawless, hinting that it may be more sluggish relative to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and other faster dual-core tablets.

    Race to the bottom....

The Vizio tablet undercuts the "Impression 10" by $1. I'll go with this one...I need that $1 to buy a friend.

    The IR blaster is nice

How come most smart phone manufacturers have removed IR ports from their feature lists?

It used to be you could work almost any VCR/TV/Cable Box with old Palm pocket PC devices.
