Payment system swipes cards using smartphone

NetSecure is preparing to launch a mobile payment system for businesses in Canada. The service, known as Kudos Payments, allows users to process credit-card transactions directly from a smartphone. The offering essentially provides Canadians with payment capabilities similar to that of Square, which is limited to the United States market.

Kudos pairs a 'swipe terminal' hardware dongle with point-of-sale software that provides a way for users to manage transactions. The company offers products for computers or iPhones, BlackBerries and Android-based devices.

Businesses currently can obtain a free Kudos kit for a limited time. The company charges a flat rate of 2.9 percent per transaction, without monthly fees or other charges.
