Nokia Windows Phone 'Sea Ray' looks like N9

Nokia in a Hungarian leak has shown its first Windows Phone 7 device. In a video presentation (below), CEO Stephen Elop showed a "super confidential" device codenamed Sea Ray. The design Technet.hu saw is nearly identical to the N9 and makes only a few changes, including WP7's dedicated camera button and a newly altered camera flash.

Not much has been seen of the OS itself, although it's known to be using Mango and thus will get multitasking, the more advanced IE9 browser, and deeper third-party app support with more advanced home tiles and camera support.

Nokia has been hopeful that it would ship its first WP7 devices before the end of the year and may use Nokia World on October 26 for the public debut. It had originally been expected to remake Symbian devices but could well be using its considerably sleeker, MeeGo-based N9 as the template instead.

Suspicions have been raised over the nature of the source. Elop was adamant that the presentation not get out to the "blogosphere," but the footage and photography captured are of unusually good quality. While a slim chance exists that it could be a staged leak, it may ultimately be an internal webcast that wasn't meant to go beyond the Finnish company's workers.

The phone regardless of its appearance is likely to be vital not just to Nokia but to Microsoft. Windows Phone has so far failed to take off, in part because it hasn't had a 'halo' device to lure users much like Apple's iPhone or the original Motorola Droid. Microsoft has paid billions in deal money to Nokia in part to artificially gain market share and could benefit if Sea Ray catches on. [via WinRumors]
