Twitter may step up ads to include tweets
New leaks Thursday have hinted Twitter was stepping up the level of advertising in its feeds. Along with its existing promoted trends, the social site is also looking at introducing promoted tweets that would slip into regular streams, not just special searches. The FT was told the ads would be pushed up even if they were hours old.
Management had supposedly been asking ad agencies at the Cannes Lions marketing gathering about new methods of pitching ads to Twitter users. It wasn't said whether or not this included the in-line Twitter updates.
The San Francisco firm hasn't had much success increasing the ad revenue of its service outside of promoted tweets. Twitter tried spurring on its ad hits through the controversial iPhone app Quick Bar but had to pull it weeks later after a backlash.
Twitter hasn't confirmed any of the details but has previously said that it explores options without necessarily implementing them itself.
