Apple sues Samsung in Korea over patents

Apple took its lawsuits against Samsung to the defender's home country on Friday as it sued Samsung again in South Korea. The new complaint is a direct allegation of patent infringement against several, though currently unnamed, technologies that Apple owns. Apple would only reiterate to Reuters its belief that Samsung was deliberately copying the iPhone and iPad with the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab 10.1.

"It is no coincidence that Samsung's latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging," the representative said.

Such tactics are common in deep-rooted product complaints as a way of pressuring a company into reaching a settlement rather than going through the expense of a trial and the risk of a product ban. Apple has widened its complaints. Samsung itself has countersued Apple over patents and, in trying to defend itsself in Apple's suit, tried to spy on the iPad 3 and iPhone 5 both to buy time and to offer a possible counter-argument.

Apple has said it was in high-level negotiations to try and reach a settlement. Samsung briefly denied the claims, although it's not clear whether those who responded were aware of the level of negotiations.

Both companies have promised to remain business partners, although Samsung faces an uphill battle in the original trade dress lawsuit in the US. Some versions of the Galaxy S and S II, particularly those sold in Korea, have a large home button and other traits that aren't common to Android and which clearly look like an iPhone.

I hope, Apple does win, but…

Quite a risky endeavour for Apple this is. I doubt Apple will end this trial in Cenghiz-Khanistan in its favour. Of course, Apple has all the reasons in the world to squash Samsung, the slant-eyed little animal-abusing copycats, but on their own premises the latter will be blatantly backed and defended fiercely by the corrupt infrastructure of their homeland.
