Motorola Atrix gets unofficial unlock
The Motorola Atrix bootloader has been unofficially unlocked. The instructions have been posted on the XDA Developers forum with the warning that users will lose all their data during the unlocking process. Once unlocked, Atrix users can install custom ROMs, including the latest Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) updates ahead of the officially supported, Motoblur infused, release.
Motorola has promised its customers that will start releasing phones with officially unlockable bootloaders towards the end of this year. However, this is on the proviso that individual carriers agree.
Carriers have an interest in keeping the bootloaders locked on Android devices as it makes it much more difficult for users to install custom Android ROMs. Custom ROMs, which can be plain vanilla installations of the Android OS, don't include carriers specific apps and services.
This effectively locks down the preinstalled OS on the device, unless an enterprising hacker can unlock the bootloader, as has now happened with the Atrix.
