PS3 price drop looming
UK gaming site MCV is reporting that “industry experts” are expecting a new price drop for the PS3. It is currently retailing for £200 ($320) and is expected to drop to £180 ($287), although UK pricing includes taxes. Sony is expected to make the announcement at an industry trade event in August.
The news of a PS3 price cut comes on the back of a recent report showing that sales of all gaming consoles are at their lowest since 2006. The Xbox 360 remains at number 1, a place it inherited from the free falling Wii console since Microsoft redesigned its console and added the popular Kinect controller.
Sony remains in its customary third place overall, and a price cut at this time would make sense. Often, news of a price cut for one console is good for consumers looking to purchase any one of the three leading consoles on the market. A price cut for the PS3 is likely to lead to a response from both Microsoft and Nintendo who may drop their price in response, or release a value added bundle.
