Nokia summer smartphones tip up early

A string of updates from well-known leaker Eldar Murtazin has outlined four new Symbian phones for the summer that should replace some of its smartphones and possibly its basic phones as well. The flagship, the Helen or C7-01, should mostly be a performance upgrade of the original with a faster 1GHz processor as well as Symbian Belle, a more advanced version than Anna that has some of the look of the MeeGo platform on the N9. It should cost the equivalent of $428 off-contract.

The Cindy, in turn, may be a replacement for the C6-01. It too will jump to a 1GHz processor and should also bring in NFC for short-range payments and tags. The 3.2-inch AMOLED screen and five-megapixel camera are similar on the phone, whose specs drops may bring it down to a $371 price.

The Zeta has much the same hardware as the Cindy but will be very thin at 8.8mm (0.35 inches). Its choice of OS is unknown, although at an estimated $414 on contract, it's likely to use the same Symbian Belle as at least the Helen.

What may be either a basic feature phone or an entry smartphone, the Fate, rounds out the group. It has a 3.2-inch LCD and drops NFC but will still have a 1GHz processor and a five-megapixel camera. At roughly $285 or less, price is likely to be the primary selling point.

Prices are expected to change, but these combined with the upcoming N5 could represent about half of the 10 Symbian devices Nokia has promised for roughly the next year. The schedule could put almost all the emphasis on Windows Phone and MeeGo among smartphones by 2012.
