Apple to move 12-14m iPads in summer
Apple has been getting more aggressive for iPad production in the spring and most of all the summer, suppliers maintained Thursday. Shipments for the tablet are estimated to have doubled to between seven million and nine million iPads in the spring and to jump about 50 percent again in the summer to between 12 million and 14 million. Tips to Digitimes have hinted that Apple has been stockpiling parts all through the spring, such as LG Display's screens, to make sure it won't run short during the summer.
The scheduling would help explain sustained delays on iPad 2 sales, which still take one to two weeks to ship from Apple. During its most recent fiscal results call, Apple said it was selling every iPad it could make and that the only limit was its production capacity ramping up at the time.
The performance should keep Apple well out in front for its share of the tablet market. Its closest known competitor Acer will have shipped 800,000 Iconia Tabs in the spring, or a tenth of the iPad's shipments, but won't be increasing that number in the summer. RIM is toning down expectations for the BlackBerry PlayBook to Acer's level after lackluster sales. Samsung has yet to fully launch the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and has been silent on its early sales performance in the US.
Most estimates have Apple shipping a total of about 40 million iPads in 2011, most of which will come in the second half of the year with the holiday.
