Best Buy breaks Toshiba Thrive street date
An Austin-area Best Buy has broken the street date on Toshiba's Thrive tablet. Officially due to ship on July 10, the Android 3 tablet was found by one user at the Thrive Forums with not just an active demo unit but 14 in stock and cleared to sell. Only the 16GB models were at the one store, but subsequent checks have found 32GB models at other Best Buy stores.
The Thrive is one of the thicker 10-inch tablets on the market. It has the dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, five-megapixel rear camera and two-megapixel front camera of multiple competitors, but Toshiba is counting on a PC-like expandability to get sales. It has full-size HDMI and USB ports as well as a microSD slot and a replaceable battery. Toshiba has been silent on if and when Android 3.1 will be ready.
A 16GB Wi-Fi Thrive like that at the Austin store costs $480, and a 32GB version costs $580. Although elusive, the 8GB version when it's available will cost just $430 and put it closer to the price of the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer. [via Unwired View]
