Netflix to head into Caribbean, Latin America this year

updated 11:40 am EDT, Tue July 5, 2011

Netflix coming to 42 new countries later in 2011

Streaming online movie and rent-by-mail service Netflix has confirmed earlier rumored plans to expand its offering beyond North America. It vowed to bring the web service to Mexico and 42 other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean later in 2011. The company left out a specific launch date and pricing.

Netflix, which launched in the US with DVD by mail rentals, has then launched a web streaming service for about $8 per month. In the fall of 2010, it expanded by offering the web streaming service only in Canada, a move that has proved to be a great success, the company admits. The company also stated earlier this year that it would spend more money on international expansion than it originally estimated.

International access has been difficult for the company since it often has to renegotiate for the same content. Movies and TV owned directly by the producers in the US may be held by a third party in another country. [via AllThingsD]
