14-in. models have edge to edge displays

Gateway has launched its new ID- and NV- series notebook computers. The new notebooks all feature USB 3.0, HDMI ports, and WiFi 802.11n. They have Windows 7 preloaded. The ID47 series uses an 14-inch, edge-to-edge panel where one might expect a 13.3-inch screen, and higher-end models also sport NVIDIA Optimus graphics switching. The new ID-series models use Intel Sandy Bridge processors, while the 15.6-inch NV55S05u uses an AMD Fusion processor.

The 14-inch ID47-series includes the ID47H02u, with a Core i5-2410M 2.3GHz processor and 4GB of DDR3 memory. A 500GB 5,400rpm hard-drive DVD burner, and Intel HD Graphics 3000 GPU round out the specs. The ID47H03h, sold in Canada, has the same display and CPU but increases to 6GB of DDR3 memory and a 750GB hard drive. It also has a NVIDIA GeForce TG 540M graphics adapter with 1GB of video RAM and Optimus auto-switching. The ID57H03h, also available in Canada, has the same GPU and hard drive, but comes with a 15.6-inch display and 8GB of DDR3 memory.

The NV55S05u notebook has a 15.6-inch display, an AMD A8-3500M quadcore 1.5GHz APU with 6GB of DDR3 RAM, and AMD Radeon HD 6620G graphics. It also has a 640GB hard-drive and a DVD burner.

In addition to the HDMI port and one USB 3.0 port, all of the new notebooks have two USB 2.0 ports, a 1.3-megapixel webcam, and stereo speakers. Battery life for the 14-inch models is estimated at eight hours. The 15.6-inch notebooks use a smaller batter rated at four hours.

All of the new ID and NV models are on sale at select retailers now. The ID47H02u is priced at $700. The NV55S05u retails for $630. Of the models available in Canada, the ID47H03h sells for CA$799 ($833), and the ID57H03h for CA$899 ($938).
