Upcoming PS3 to only support Blu-ray HD over HDMI

A newly leaked document sent to Kotaku reveals Sony's next PS3 console won't support HD playback of Blu-ray discs through its component output, unlike current consoles. Existing models won't get the same restriction through a software update, however. Ars Technica reached out to Sony regarding this matter and was told the change is a requirement of the Advanced Access Content System agreement.

"The new CECH-3000 series PS3 requires HDMI only for BD movie output in HD, in compliance with AACS standards," Sony said. "PS3 continues to support component output for HD gaming and streaming content."

Whether Sony will bundle these new PS3s with an HDMI cable remains to be seen, but if not, retailers will get a chance for some extra profits by pushing the accessory.

The AACS is a DRM standard that limits HD video resolutions to HDCP-compliant HDMI and DVI cables. In 2014, new Blu-ray players will be restricted from having component ports to comply with the AACS standard. It doesn't appear gaming or local and streaming HD content will be affected by this restriction.
