Global Atrix owners get unlocked bootloader

The hackers and developers over on the XDA Developers forum have new found a way to unlock Motorola's Atrix smartphone on all carriers from around the world. This marks a significant step forward from just one month ago, when the same source found a way to unlock the AT&T version of the handset. The latest unlock, dubbed Project Cheesecake, relied on an upcoming Orange UK firmware upgrade.

While detailed instructions on how to unlock the handset haven't yet been published on the site, they are expected to come soon. Testing is being done and localized versions of the unlock are being developed as well.

Unlocked Atrix handsets can then take the latest Android builds without waiting for carriers to release them and can also support custom ROMs.

Motorola has promised unlocked bootloaders in the future to give users the freedom to modify their firmware, but it has mostly limited that to future hardware and said it might be restricted by carriers. The new methods could circumvent this and give ready-made access to those willing to risk their phones' warranties in the process.
