Cisco outs $130 dual-band home theater bridge

Cisco on Tuesday introduced its new Linksys WES610N 802.11n Wi-Fi dual-band entertainment bridge. The device will bring together any home theater device with an Ethernet port onto a home wireless network, be they set-top boxes, HDTVs or games consoles. It can offer speeds up to 300Mbps and has multiple antennas for greater range.

The device can send out 2.4GHz or 5GHz wireless signals, but not at the same time. There are four Ethernet ports, and Cisco promises smooth HD video streaming thanks to packet priority tuning. Security options go up to WPA2 encryption and a WPS button for quickly pairing with a wireless router.

The bridge is now shipping for $130. A less expensive $100 version gives up three of the Ethernet ports.

    What's so special?

I have been using a DLINK N bridge for more than 18 months to link a WD Live + to a media server and stream video.
