Another Foxconn worker dies in fall in Chinese facility

Apparent suicide latest in a series of such deaths

A 21-year old worker jumped to his death today at a Foxconn manufacturing facility in southern China. This was the latest in a series of similar tragedies that have plagued the company over the past two years. Last year alone, Foxconn experienced over a dozen employee suicides.

In the latest incident, the migrant worker fell from the sixth floor of a company dormitory in the city of Shenzhen. He worked for the company for less than two months.

In the past, Foxconn has been criticized for its alleged harsh labor practices. After the rash of suicides last year, the company said it would improve work conditions, increase pay, and reduce overtime. Foxconn also said it would build several new manufacturing facilities in locations nearer to where its migrant employees lived permanently. The company employs over one million factory workers.

Foxconn is a contract mass production manufacturer probably best known for producing iPhones and other products for Apple. It also manufactures products for Dell, HP, Nokia, and Sony Ericsson, among others. [via Reuters]

    Statistics

As horrible as it is for anyone to commit suicide, if the numbers are correct then 12 out of 1,000,000 workers is almost 10 times better than the US suicide rate of around 110 per 1,000,000 people. Still any suicide is bad and I hope Apple does what it can to keep the Foxconn workers happy.

If Apple was concerned about the suicides they should have done more than a 2% pay increase ($20) and taking the workers life insurance benefit from them...Oh and this http://www.apple.com/supplierresponsibility/ (a joke).

I would like to know how many of the 110 of 1,000,000 suicides in the US are at there place of work and if they are all employed by the same company. And for some reason the suicides are occurring primarily by Apple engineers. Huh, curious?

    apparent?

Or, perhaps, part of a deeper and more sinister plot. Was this person involved with the News of the World phone hacking? Is it a coincidence that Bill Clinton leaves the white house, and 11 years later, this worker mysteriously dies? Are they sure they've ruled out terrorism?

If you want to believe it was an 'accident' or 'suicide', feel free. But people with intelligence know that such coincidences are just too perfect to be anything but a plot.

    I dunno about you guys...

but I'm really tired of seeing that depressed-looking Foxconn worker every time an article related to Foxconn is posted.

Droid, your comment is useless. The US is way down the list in suicides per capita, and these Fox Conn suicide reports put its suicide rate an order of magnitude lower than US's. Efforts to connect this fact of life with some horror or conspiracy is becoming a bore. And the reality of China's largeness is something westerner's seem to have no understanding of.

    Drinking!

Sadly this has more to do with drinking then anything else.. The original article has stated that this poor person fell while being drunk. Nothing is said about suicide! Is anyone saying Apple should stop adults from drinking, or that Apple us responsble for those who do! This is sad enough story without all the ihaters using the death of a poor Chinese worker to justify their choice of technology! Technology, I add, that is bulit in the same factories!
