Apparent suicide latest in a series of such deaths
A 21-year old worker jumped to his death today at a Foxconn manufacturing facility in southern China. This was the latest in a series of similar tragedies that have plagued the company over the past two years. Last year alone, Foxconn experienced over a dozen employee suicides.
In the latest incident, the migrant worker fell from the sixth floor of a company dormitory in the city of Shenzhen. He worked for the company for less than two months.
In the past, Foxconn has been criticized for its alleged harsh labor practices. After the rash of suicides last year, the company said it would improve work conditions, increase pay, and reduce overtime. Foxconn also said it would build several new manufacturing facilities in locations nearer to where its migrant employees lived permanently. The company employs over one million factory workers.
Foxconn is a contract mass production manufacturer probably best known for producing iPhones and other products for Apple. It also manufactures products for Dell, HP, Nokia, and Sony Ericsson, among others. [via Reuters]
