Notion Ink CEO hopes for Adam 2 this December

Adam tablet maker Notion Ink plans to release a successor, the Adam 2, by December, CEO Rohan Shravan revealed in an interview with LightReading. The device should be seen in January at the annual CES show, as Shravan admits to being a big fan of the expo. The Indian company currently has 110 employees, including about 15 interns and consultants, but the company needs to expand, as it has operations in 87 countries.

When asked about what makes the Adam tablet in particular appealing, Shravan said it is its design, fresh take on tablets and large community following. And on the topic of a general user disappointment with the device, Shravan offered simply that the expectation was too high.

Shravan further only sees Apple as a true competitor as he believes it's the only one that brings any innovation to tablets rather than the vision "forced by Google and the chip manufacturers." Most Android 3 tablets cling tightly to the stock interface and only have light customizations at most.

As for the popularity of the Adam, Shravan is confident the Indian tablet market will grow exponentially when local content arrives, which will include audio, video and apps meant for business. He did admit, however, that the Indian market requires more effort than the global market and will take more time to evolve and mature. Notion Ink has a different strategy for India.

The sales method of exclusively offering the Adam online through its own site is more efficient and profitable, with the quick turn-around letting the company invest back into the company quicker.

"Retail is definitely on the cards, but it's too dangerous a proposition to implement right now," he said.
