BlackBerry PlayBook's Android App Player accidentally live

updated 05:25 pm EDT, Thu July 21, 2011

BlackBerry PlayBook Android wrapper posted early

RIM unintentionally gave BlackBerry PlayBook owners early access to its promised Android App Player. A beta direct download found on the company's own servers through a changelog runs Android 2.3 on a basic level. The OS uses the bezel and swipes to fill in for Android's missing hardware controls and can run with PlayBook apps in the background.

The pre-release app lags and appears to be limited to core apps so far, though this may be out of a lack of third-party support for the unreleased code.

RIM has promised that the Android App Player will arrive sometime in the summer but doesn't appear to be close enough to release the OS in the immediate future. When it arrives, it will only run apps designed to run properly in Android 2.3 and will need them to be put in a special wrapper and posted on BlackBerry App World. [via N4BB]
