Google Nexus S gets ATT-native 3G on July 24

Google on Thursday fulfilled a longstanding request as it said it would ship an AT&T-native version of the Nexus S in the US. Its version follows after the original T-Mobile version and Sprint's Nexus S 4G. The official Android 2.3 phone is functionally identical to the T-Mobile version other than a switch of frequencies to support the 7.2Mbps 3G.

The phone continues to center on its four-inch, curved Super AMOLED screen as well as Android 2.3-focused features like a second, front-facing camera for Google Talk video chat and NFC for mobile payments and tags.

AT&T-ready versions will be on sale at Best Buy shops on July 24. Neither side has said whether the phone will be unlocked, though an AT&T-locked model will be ready for $100 on a two-year contract. Canadians have already had a Nexus S with AT&T's 3G since April and can buy it both unlocked and attached to one of several carriers.

Verizon is now the only major US carrier not to have a Nexus S variant and may not have one at all given the several months old design. Google plans to have a new Nexus phone by the end of the year for its Ice Cream Sandwich OS update.
