Prototype utilizes relatively small sensor

A leaked image is claimed to show the sensor and mount for an unannounced Nikon camera, referred to as the "X810." Details surrounding the image are slim, however the camera does appear to utilize a relatively small sensor. The picture, which was posted on the Chinese forum Xitek, reportedly represents a prototype camera.

Many potential customers are expected to be disappointed if the camera is eventually confirmed to integrate a small sensor, such as a 1/2.3- or 1/2.5-inch variant that is common to point-and-shoot cameras. Pentax was criticized for using a 1.2/3-inch sensor in its mirrorless Q cameras, while competing products, such Sony's NEX-C3, have opted for the much larger APS-C sensor familiar to full-fledged DSLRs.

Earlier reports suggest Nikon may be adopting a unique sensor size with a 2.6X crop factor, which would fit between the 1/2.3-inch size and the larger APS-C spread or Four Thirds sensor.

Nikon has yet to formally announce a mirrorless camera with swappable lenses, though several patent filings corroborate rumors that the company is working on such technology. [via Nikon Rumors]
