iOS 5 beta 4 goes live

Apple finished the week by giving its developer channel beta 4 of iOS 5. The update has few details but is the company's first ever update beyond its walls to come as an over-the-air update, not a manual install. The delivery may be a clue to a wind-down of testing as the company checks to make sure that updates can go live on a larger scale.

Accompanying the release are iTunes 10.5 beta 4 as well as Xcode 4.2 Developer Preview 4. What they add is also uncertain.

Apple has so far been gradually exposing or adding features through iOS 5 betas in addition to tackling performance and stability issues. Beta 3, released less than two weeks ago, provided custom text message tones that weren't seen earlier. A chance exists that new features will be available here as well, although with a release unofficially expected in September, Apple may only have one or two more test cycles to go.
