Qualcomm buys part of GestureTek for smartphones
Mobile device chipmaker Qualcomm on Monday said it has purchased a part of GestureTek, a company that calls itself the world leader in computer vision control. The privately-held, California-based company is expected to contribute to future chips for smartphones. Qualcomm purchased parts of GestureTek's business meant for smartphones and left behind those related to public displays and digital signage.
A video demo on a Nintendo DS of GestureTek's Momo engine is embedded below, though it's about a year old. The user's head is tracked and the motion's translate to controlling the avatar's head in the sports game. It is also said to allow answering calls or turning pages without touching the screen or buttons.
