Executive responsible for co-founding PGP
Security firm Entrust has appointed Jon Callas as its new chief technology officer, according to a statement. The company calls Callas "one of the most respected and well-known leaders in the mobile security industry," and notes that he co-founded PGP Corporation, most famous for owning the code behind the PGP encryption standard. Most recently he is said to have worked as an OS security expert with Apple.
Callas' exact responsibilities at Apple have been kept out of the public eye. He only took the OS security position in April 2010, however, which could suggest that the company has become increasingly concerned about Mac and/or iOS security as the platforms become bigger targets. He may have been brought on board to help with OS X Lion, which would have been in early stages of development at the time.
He has also worked for Apple in the past. A public resume (PDF) mentions that he was a senior engineer and scientist at the company between 1995 and 1997, specializing in "networking and collaboration products written in
C++, Java, on Macintoshes and Win32." These included "systems for electronic commerce and privacy with strong cryptographic systems." Callas has also worked for firms such as DEC, World Benders, Counterpane and Wave Systems.
