Supposed iPhone 5 cases show curved back, larger screen

iPhone 5 cases allege curved new design

A pair of case leaks Tuesday have hinted that talk of a major iPhone 5 redesign may be real. Two separate manufacturers both showed MobileFun a design that returned to a curved back. They also show what would clearly be a larger screen as the speaker and front camera would have to be pushed further to the top.

The design showed the camera largely being similar, despite talk of a redesigned camera layout. A large cutout for the home button might not necessarily represent an enlarged button given that one of the designs also has knowingly oversized cutouts for other areas.

The design is clearly for an iPhone, not an iPod touch, given the existence of holes for the microphone and the micro SIM slot.

Whether or not the finished product matches the cases isn't clear. Earlier case leaks backed some, but not all, of the changes. Apple is known to make design changes between early stages and the final model and might have modified the iPhone even if one or more of the designs is accurate. Some have claimed the next iPhone may just be a slight variant on the iPhone 4 design with few outside changes.

A finished iPhone 5 is rumored due in September.

    Flat back. Curved edges.

Prefer a mostly flat back. Didn't like the 3G / 3GS shape because it rocked when placed on a flat surface.

Still have the 2G rockin. Dropped it SOOO many times, not a problem with the screen.
ALL (I don't think that's an overstatement) of my friends with 3GS phones have had a cracked screen. The curve concentrates the force when dropped?
    iPhone 4 seems pretty sturdy.

If they go back to more of 3GS design I'd be leary.

    just wondering...

Given the same design in the iPads between Wi-Fi & 3G versions, should we expect the next (or perhaps next next) iPod Touch and iPhone to have a similar chassis, with the iphone simply adding a mobile chip and faceplate changes for proximity sensor, etc?

Can't recall if there's a noise-cancelling mic on the ipod (never owned one), but with Wi-Fi and Facetime, I'd think it should.

Anyhow, just throwing that out there....

    Curved vs Tapered

As usual, electronista fifth grade speed readering editors miss the obvious in the pics. The back of these cases are not curved like the 3GS, but rather tapered. So no worries about rocking when placed on a flat surface.

Rocked? Doesn't your iPhone, like everyone's, live in a protective casing? You can't just have your iPhone out loose. It might fall and crack or break or something. And you then try to complain about this cheap device, and then get yelled at for not putting an expensive piece of electronics in at least a modicum of protection.
