Samsung gets edge on Apple in tablet displays

An updated tablet display quality shootout at DisplayMate has just given Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 a slight edge over the iPad 2. While the Apple tablet remained superior to all the other tablets with a wide enough margin to win the last comparison, the new Galaxy Tab was often just ahead enough in tests to win overall. Samsung had the clear edge in resolution at 1280x800 but had just slightly better black levels, brightness, contrast, and glare.

The was partly offset by areas where Apple still performed better. Apple had a much better white accuracy and was slightly undersaturated where Samsung's color was overdone. Contrast was also slightly better for the iPad 2 at indirect viewing angles.

As before, the worst screen belonged to the Motorola Xoom. Despite costing as much or more than the iPad, it had massive shifts in color with viewing angle and was often far too undersaturated and inaccurate as a whole. Acer and ASUS in the middle had good viewing angles but were using low-quality 18-bit panels where dithering was needed to simulate missing colors.

Samsung was commended for pushing ahead, but the situation was seen as being in flux with a new set of tablets likely to arrive soon. Apple was the known wildcard as it could introduce a 2048x1536 display in the iPad 3 that would give it a large advantage. Samsung might counter with a 2560x1600 Galaxy Tab based on its own screen production plans.

In all cases, DisplayMate suggested that companies needed to cut back furhter on glare, options to adjust the picture quality, better gamut and saturation, and more intelligent uses of ambient light senors to tune the picture.

    It's still a Samsung.

Considering Samsung is, IMHO, the company with the worst customer service in the history of the known universe, I wouldn't choose the Galaxy Tab over a festering pile of dog snot. At least the dog snot would do what it's supposed to.

    No wonder...

..Apple is feeling threatened and suing the c*** out of them.
