Samsung Galaxy S II cracks 5m 40 days earlier
(Update: 10 million coming, not yet) Samsung on Wednesday said it had pushed past five million sales of the Galaxy S II. Its milestone came 85 days after launch and just a month after the three million mark. Cracking five million for the Android range leader also came 40 days earlier than for the original Galaxy S.
The company expected to get to 10 million much sooner than it did with its headlining phone from a year ago.
South Korea played a large part, Samsung said: 56 percent of smartphones reportedly belonged to the one model. The device was supposedly tops in 10 European countries, including key countries like France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK.
The rise followed even without factoring in an impending US launch as well as reaching out into China and more of the Americas.
Analyst estimates have Samsung shipping 18 million to 20 million smartphones in the summer and could see the company potentially overtake Apple for the top smartphone maker by volume in the world. Whether or not it reaches the target will hinge mostly on its other phones, including budget Android models, its self-developed Bada phones, and Windows Phone.
Any Samsung lead is potentially short since Apple has given strong hints of an iPhone 5 launch before the end of the summer and could push ahead.

Not bad sales for just one
model of Android smartphone, but I'm certain that Apple will sell 10 million iPhone 5s in less than a month and maybe in as little as ten days (which will be all in the U.S.). So if the GS II does put Samsung in front, it will be a short-lived victory especially after the iPhone 5 goes international.
