School chooses Android tablets over iPads

Samsung has announced that its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets will be distributed to many students attending The University of Southern Mississippi. The school's pilot program will include 1,000 tablets, each loaded with an education app, Blackboard Mobile Learn, that will provide access to course information, syllabi, textbooks, grades, schedules, and other content.

Many educational institutions have announced similar initiatives, however the Southern Miss program represents one of the few to utilize an Android-based tablet rather than the iPad. Apple COO Tim Cook recently claimed the iPad now outsells the Mac in the K-12 education market. The iPad's appeal is said to be bolstered by a large number of educational apps and popularity in the public market.

“Tablets are like the Swiss Army Knife to academic excellence," said Southern Miss Chief Information Officer Homer Coffman.

The Galaxy Tabs will be handed to select Southern Miss Honors College students this fall.
