Exec claims 3D gaming not well received
Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello has reportedly downplayed the significance of 3D technology in the gaming market. In a shareholder meeting, the executive suggested 3D gaming has yet to prove profitable. The company is said to be focusing instead on social and web-based features.
"Frankly, we have not seen a big uptake for 3D gaming," Riccitiello said, according to quotes posted by Gamasutra. "We haven't seen a big uptake for 3D televisions in the home, at least not yet."
The CEO argues that "a lot of us" consider 3D gaming environments to be more appealing on a 2D display.
"We've seen really high returns [from online and social innovation], and very poor returns focusing on 3D," Riccitiello added. "So our allocation of resources have been toward the new innovations that are growing more rapidly."
Although 3D appears to have proven profitable in movie theaters, some gaming companies have not achieved the same luck. Nintendo recently slashed the price of its new 3DS handheld console, amid reports that the device is being outsold two-to-one by older models with 2D displays.
