RIM delays PlayBook's Android support

RIM has reportedly delayed its PlayBook support for Android apps to late fall. Although it had originally promised a summer release, a rumor early Wednesday from a "reliable source" now has it arriving near the end of the fall. It's not known why the release would have been set back from the Engadget source.

The company hasn't confirmed or denied the claim as of Wednesday morning.

Major software updates for the PlayBook have been slow in coming. The company quietly delayed native e-mail, calendars, and contacts to late summer. Versions of the tablet with built-in 3G and 4G were once thought to be coming in the summer but themselves are coming in the fall, in part because they need a fundamental software change to get on-device security.

App support has been one of the sorer points of the PlayBook, including in our review. The new platform forced developers to start largely from scratch and has left RIM with just a few thousand native PlayBook apps at best compared to over 100,000 on the iPad. Android apps will have to run in a special wrapper but could still rapidly inflate the PlayBook's app count.
