Foursquare, Instagram back online after Amazon EC2 outage

Problems quickly addressed

Amazon appears to have resolved an outage that affected the company's EC2 operations based in Northern Virginia. The problems reportedly brought down services from a wide range of websites, including Foursquare, Instagram, Netflix, Reddit and Quora, among others. The problems were isolated to the EC2 East-1 location, rather than both of Amazon's EC2 datacenters in the US.

Although the US outage was quickly resolved, Amazon is still dealing with a more serious problem at a European datacenter. A lightning strike last night reportedly wreaked havoc on the company's servers, bringing down the Ireland-based operations.

The European outage is expected to be fixed with 24 to 48 hours. [via TechCrunch]
