Trend runs in face of adoption sceptics

3D TV viewing may be catching on at a faster pace than perceived. A recent study, conducted by Strategy Analytics, found that two-thirds of 3D TV owners in the US and Europe actually watch at least one 3D program on their sets every week. About 41 percent claim to be watching 3D shows at least once a day.

The use was "confounding the skeptics," said David Mercer, Principal Analyst for Strategy Analytics and the report's author. "A significant minority of 3DTV owners now watch some TV in 3D on a daily basis."

The report also found that the typical 3D family owns two pairs of glasses. A majority indicated that they would buy more glasses if the price were lower. Strategy Analytics based its findings on an online survey of over 4,800 individuals in the US, UK, France, Germany and Italy who owned 3D TVs.

The TVs were relatively rare through 2010 and still uncommon for much of 2011. Most 3D sets carry a premium over their 2D versions and often have limits, such as needing to buy expensive 3D glasses. Dropping set prices as well as the launches of sets with cheap passive 3D have helped make it an easier option.
