Google to stop development of App Inventor

The shutdown of Google Labs has also resulted in Google App Inventor for Android being dropped. Google has posted a message to users stating that it will discontinue App Inventor as a Google product and will open source its code. The company has also indicated that as the app has been successful in school environments, it is exploring ways in which it can continue to support the use of the app in that context.

App Inventor uses MIT's Open Blocks to allow users to construct mobile apps visually. Users do not need to know any programming code to be able to create functional apps. As a result, it has been particularly popular in schools as an introduction to the world of app development.

Although relatively simple to use, the tool allows users to access relatively deep levels of a device's functionality. For example, users can use App Inventor to access GPS positioning services and accelerometers.

Since becoming the CEO of Google, co-founder Larry Page has been busy streamlining Google's product catalog to concentrate on maximizing the utilization of its resources. While some projects like Google Labs and App Inventor are being shuttered, others are being folded into larger projects.
